Don Bennett receives award for outstanding contributions to pharmacy

Don Bennett Beal AwardThe Ohio Pharmacists Association (OPA) announced that Don Bennett, R.Ph., MBA of Westerville, Ohio is the 2018 recipient of the Beal Award for outstanding contributions to the profession of pharmacy.

This award, which was presented at the OPA 140th Annual Conference April 20-22 in Columbus, is presented annually to honor a pharmacist who has made continued, outstanding contributions to the advancement of the pharmacy profession.

Bennett served as Director of Pharmacy at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus for over 25 years where he expanded the scope of pharmacy practice to better serve patients. As regional vice president of Pharmacy Systems, Inc, Bennett oversaw pharmacy management services in 14 hospitals across the Midwest. He served as the Director of Professional Experience Programs at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and continues to lead inter-professional clinical simulations for students of the Colleges of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

A past president of both OPA and the Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Bennett has been recognized with many awards. One of his major professional accomplishments was helping to initiate and craft legislation to allow pharmacists to administer immunizations. He continues to train pharmacists and student pharmacists in immunization administration to improve immunization rates in the state of Ohio.

Bennett earned his pharmacy degree from The Ohio State University and his masters in business administration from Capital University.

“It is an easy task to recognize the contributions to pharmacy of Don Bennett. His dedication to the profession is evident through his many years of involvement with OPA, the Ohio Pharmacists Foundation, and The Ohio State University,” said Ernest Boyd, OPA Executive Director.

OPA, established in 1879, represents more than 4,000 pharmacists, pharmacy educators, and pharmacy students throughout the state. It is OPA’s mission to unite the profession of pharmacy and encourage interprofessional relations, while promoting public health through education, discussion, and legislation.
