During my rotation with the Ohio Pharmacists Association (OPA), I had the chance to participate in several experiences that not only expanded my understanding of the pharmacy profession but also deepened my commitment to community work and pharmacy advocacy. I gained invaluable insights into the importance of pharmacists in advocating for better healthcare, supporting underserved communities, and driving change within the profession.
One of the most meaningful experiences I had this month was presenting at my old Islamic charter school, Sunrise Academy, on mental health awareness. As someone who is deeply passionate about mental health advocacy, this opportunity was incredibly special to me. Growing up, mental health was not a topic discussed openly in my community due to stigma. Being able to return to my school and talk to current high school students about the importance of mental health felt like a full-circle moment. I wanted to encourage them to check in on their friends and loved ones, and to feel comfortable speaking up if they needed help. My goal was to help to normalize conversations about mental health and break the stigma that has kept people from seeking support. It was especially rewarding because I was able to return to a place that shaped my own journey, while also contributing to a cause I care so much about.
Another memorable experience I had was attending a Board of Pharmacy meeting for the first time. I was able to observe the Board in action, and it was fascinating to see how decisions on our practice are made. What stood out to me the most was how, regardless of the decision being made, the Board always had the best interest of both the community and the profession in mind. It was clear that they are committed to ensuring that pharmacy practices are safe, effective, and aligned with the needs of patients.
I also attended the Health Provider Services Committee meeting about Senate Bill 95 for remote dispensing pharmacy operations. It was my first visit to the Ohio Statehouse since my 4th grade class field trip, and it was exciting to witness the legislative process firsthand. I was able to hear real testimonies and learn about the potential impact of the bill on healthcare at large.
Lastly, an activity I really enjoyed taking part in this month was copy editing articles for the OPA journal. Writing has always been my passion, so being able to contribute my thoughts to articles that aligned with my interests was both fun and fulfilling.
Being part of OPA this month gave me the chance to connect with experienced pharmacists and leaders who provided mentorship and support for projects that will positively impact the community and our profession. It also allowed me to engage with important advocacy efforts and grow as a future healthcare professional. Being involved with OPA as a student member is invaluable due to the many opportunities for growth and connection with leaders in the field. Overall, my rotation at OPA was a rewarding experience that solidified my passion for pharmacy, mental health advocacy, and community outreach. It is an experience that has motivated me to continue advocating for both the profession and the patients we serve, and I am grateful for the chance to contribute to meaningful projects and expand my understanding of the profession.
