Pharmacist Training Program for Immunizations

The Pharmacist Training Program for Immunizations will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

Note: Non-member registration will open on February 16, 2022.

The Ohio Pharmacists Association was instrumental in the passage of HB 394 which allows Ohio pharmacists and pharmacy interns to administer all immunizations recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to individuals 7 years of age and older.

Pharmacists and pharmacy interns desiring to give immunizations must:

complete a course in drug administration approved by the State Board of Pharmacy;
receive and maintain certification to perform basic life-support procedures by completing a basic life-support training course certified by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association;practice in accordance with a definitive set of treatment guidelines specified in a protocol established by a physician and approved by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy.

Goals. The goals of this program are to train pharmacists to set up an immunization program for all vaccines recommended by ACIP; and to train pharmacists to properly administer vaccines and meet the requirements established by the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy for recordkeeping and for the use of physician protocols. Participants must demonstrate proper sterile technique and administration of both IM and SQ injections during the program, and should wear clothing with easy access to the deltoid muscle.

Objectives. At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:

describe the immune system including types of antigens, types of immunity and the immune system reaction to immunizations;
list the disease states and types of immunity associated with immunizations for diphtheria, hepatitis A & B, Hib, HPV, influenza, measles, meningitis, mumps, pertussis, pneumonia, polio, rubella, tetanus, varicella and zoster;
identify the appropriate administration schedules, route of administration, injection sites, dosages, precautions and contraindications, proper storage requirements, appropriate patient populations, and appropriate monitoring and treatment of the patient for adverse reactions for each of these immunizations, diphenhydramine and epinephrine;
demonstrate proper sterile technique in preparation and administration of injectable and intranasal dosage forms;
explain the proper disposal procedures for contaminated needles and immunizations, and the proper procedures for accidental needle sticks; and
describe requirements for recordkeeping and protocols as outlined by the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy.

Certificate of Achievement.
To become eligible to receive a Certificate of Achievement for this program and to meet OhioState Board of Pharmacy criteria, participants must:

complete the home-study activity with a passing grade of at least 80%: Vaccine-Preventable Diseases: Overview and Recommended Immunizations (ACPE 0129-0000-20-062-H06-P, 0.5 CEU)
successfully complete the live training session (ACPE 0129-0000-21-068-L06-P, 0.55 CEU)
show proof of current certification in CPR; if not yet certified, complete a CPR course through your local American Red Cross or American Heart Association chapter

The live portion of this program meets the training requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens standard as revised by the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000. Pharmacists and others providing immunizations and/or point-of-care test involving blood have the potential to be exposed to a bloodborne pathogen and must meet the requirements of this standard, including annual live training, or risk facing fines.

This program has been approved by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy to qualify pharmacists to administer all immunizations recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the CDC to individuals 7 years of age and older.

Requests for refunds, less $15 administrative fee, will be honored if received at least one week prior to the program.
