New Practitioner? Cincinnati is for You.

By Scott Uram, R.Ph., PharmD

Cincinnati

Cincinnati ranked 15 out of 20 in Forbes annual list of “The 20 Best Cities For Young Professionals.” Cities that ranked on the list are the best area for college grads with less than five years of experience. It’s a great city to call home, and below are my top five reasons any young practitioner should want to live there.

  1. Sports  Cincinnati offers two major league sports teams to cheer on, the Cincinnati Reds major league baseball team and the Cincinnati Bengals, members of the North Division of the AFC in the NFL. The Cincinnati Reds are baseball’s first professional franchise and their stadium, the Great American Ball Park, pays homage to the old-time baseball shrines with the Reds Hall of Fame Museum that features player appearances and interactive exhibits. Both teams play right in downtown Cincinnati, which makes for a nice night out with friends and family.
  1. Skyline Chili  In 1949, Nicholas Lambrinides opened his first Skyline Chili restaurant, showcasing his family’s secret chili recipe. The restaurant got its name because their first location overlooked the skyline of Cincinnati, Ohio. The chili is usually served over unseasoned spaghetti with a giant mountain of unnaturally orange shredded cheese thrown on top. Outsiders might think this combination is strange, but I assure you it is quite tasty.
  1. Kings Island Amusement Park  With more than 100 rides, shows, and attractions plus Soak City Water Park, Kings Island offers the perfect combination of world-class thrills and family attractions. Guests can experience the park’s 16 thrill-inducing roller coasters, like Diamondback, the tallest and fastest roller coaster at Kings Island, and the world’s longest wooden roller coaster, The Beast. New to the park this year is Mystic Timbers, a wooden coaster offering 16 airtime moments and a tantalizing mystery.
  1. Cincinnati Zoo & Newport Aquarium  Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! The Cincinnati Zoo is the second oldest zoo in the nation and is consistently ranked as one of the top zoos in the country. You can feed giraffes, take a safari ride, or send your senses into overdrive in their 4-D theater. The zoo’s 75 acres house more than 580 animal species making it one of the largest zoo collections in the U.S.
Just over the Ohio border into Kentucky is the Newport Aquarium. Guests have the opportunity to touch a shark, play in the interactive frog hog, and even pet a penguin. If you’re really daring you can take a stroll across the Shark Bridge, the only suspension bridge in North America where people can walk just inches above two dozen sharks.
  1. Jungle Jim’s International Market  If you’re a foodie like me, then you’ll sure love Jungle Jim’s International Market. Approximately 30 minutes north of Cincinnati, Jungle Jim’s offers a huge selection of food from over 75 different countries. Jungle Jim’s is notable for one of the largest wine collections in the United States, live seafood tanks, and an in-store cooking school. It has been described by many as a theme park of food because of the several animatronic displays throughout the store. People visit from neighboring states each week because the specialty foods found at Jungle Jim’s are so hard to find at other stores.
