New Immunization Rules Effective October 19th

On May 31, 2007 Governor Strickland signed SB 58 into law which expands the pharmacy practice act to allow trained pharmacists to administer adult vaccines for prevention of diphtheria, pertussis and meningitis. In addition, pharmacists may administer influenza vaccines to individuals 14 years of age or older, and trained pharmacy interns may administer influenza vaccines to persons 18 years of age or older. Pharmacists may also administer epinephrine and diphenhydramine in emergency situations resulting from adverse reactions to immunizations administered by the pharmacist or pharmacy intern. New rules for immunization courses, protocols, record-keeping and pharmacy intern professional functions became effective October 19.
