    Ohio Pharmacists Association 127th Annual Conference and Trade Show

    Pharmacy practice is headed toward major change in 2006. Medicaid will move 1.5 million beneficiaries to managed care, Medicare Part D will begin paying pharmacists for Medication Therapy Management, and individual pharmacists will begin billing using the new National Provider Identification number. The 2006 OPA Annual Conference is a “must attend” meeting for any pharmacist planning to practice in this rapidly-changing environment. You will hear from a pharmacist who is currently prescribing in the state of New Mexico, and you’ll be able to express your opinion at the OPA Town Hall meeting as to whether Ohio pharmacists should also have prescribing rights. Clinical programs on a variety of drugs and disease states, clinical ethics, drug diversion, behavioral change, research forum, quality standards in pharmacy, new drugs, pharmacy history, and a State Board-approved Ohio law update are just a few of the CE opportunities from which to choose.

    When calling for reservations, indicate that you are with the Ohio Pharmacists Association meeting to obtain the above room rates. Reservation requests after March 20 for the Hampton Inn, Hyatt Regency, and Crowne Plaza, and April 4 for the Drury Inn, are subject to availability and may not be at conference rates. A check, money order, or major credit card covering your first night's stay will guarantee late arrival. Cancellations must be received by 4:00 p.m. on night of arrival for refunds.

    Continuing Education Credit
    This Conference is targeted to all pharmacists and pharmacy students. The Continuing Education (CE) portion of the 128th OPA Annual Conference is being coordinated by the Ohio Pharmacists Foundation. As part of its mission, the Foundation provides education programs designed for pharmacists, to address the daily issues of pharmacy.
    To receive continuing pharmacy education credit, you must fill out the CE form indicating programs attended, sign, date, and return it to OPA staff. Your statement of CE credit will be mailed to you within four weeks.
    Complete learning objectives for each of the continuing pharmacy education programs will be available on the OPA website at www.ohiopharmacists.org.

    Special Events

    Awards Luncheon
    Friday 12:10 p.m.
    OPA will recognize excellence in the profession at the Awards Luncheon. Awards will be given to colleagues recognizing contributions to the profession, to the community and to the Association. In addition, media representatives will be recognized for their support of educating the public on safe medicine use and for awareness of pharmacy issues.

    Trade Show and Door Prize Drawing

    This year's Trade Show promises to be a great event! Pharmacists and pharmacy students will have ample time to meet and network with a variety of company representatives who will share their product and service information, enjoy the entertainment, and maybe even win a prize. And, you won't miss any of the continuing education sessions!

    Poster Session
    Friday, 3:40-6:00 p.m.
    Our 7th Annual Poster Session will feature the research of the faculty and students from Ohio's colleges of pharmacy and from practitioners around the state. Presenters will be eager to share their research and field your questions. The Poster Session will be located in the Exhibit Hall, and will follow the 2:00 p.m. Ohio Research Forum 2006 CE session. Thanks to Procter & Gamble for their support of this valuable program.

    A Tribute to New Orleans & OPF Silent Auction
    Friday, 7:00 p.m.
    Dress casually and come celebrate New Orleans with jazz, street style entertainment, Mardi Gras beads, and dinner -- all with a Big Easy flair. Enjoy the music of The King of Creole as Arnett Howard's Trio makes a special appearance! We'll also be captivated by the unusual tableside entertainment of Mark Abbati, the Living Statue. In addition, you will have the opportunity to support the Ohio Pharmacists Foundation's (OPF) educational programming and research endeavors as OPF holds its 2nd Annual Silent Auction. Last year's auction was a great success and we are pleased to tempt you again with a great selection of pharmacy antiques, university paraphernalia, entertainment packages, and more.

    Support Ohio pharmacy in this critical legislative session by attending the Political Action Committee Breakfast. You'll hear from an interesting Ohio political figure, and contribute to the success of the PAC. It's a great kickoff to a valuable day at the Conference!

    Career Fair
    Saturday, 12:10 - 2:30 p.m.
    Are you searching for a first job or wanting to make a change? The 2006 OPA Career Fair will give you the opportunity to find out more about the many opportunities available in pharmacy. Whether you are looking for an internship, residency, part-time or full-time position, recruiters representing many of the major pharmacy markets will be on hand to talk to you. Formal interviews will not be conducted during this time. The Career Fair will be located within the Exhibit Hall. Be sure to bring copies of your resume'to leave with potential employers for future reference and/or follow-up contacts.

    Students are welcome to attend all continuing education programming. (Note: Student prices not applicable if requesting CE credit.) In addition, here are a few student-only events.

    Student Law Review
    Saturday, 2:30 p.m.
    Dr. Donald Sullivan from Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy is back by popular demand to give a general law review for students preparing to take the NAPLEX and Ohio law examination for licensure. In addition, he will include practical test-taking tips, unexpected questions, and feedback from pharmacists who recently took the exam.

    Pharmacy Olympics/Student Party
    Saturday, 4:30 p.m.
    Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy will be attempting to keep its title as Pharmacy Olympic Champions from last year's Conference! All pharmacy students are invited to attend the Pharmacy Olympics being held at Damon's, just a short walk from the Convention Center across Nationwide Boulevard. We will have music, food, and lots of pharmacy games! Come socialize with other pharmacy students while you participate in the student Pharmacy Olympics.

    Town Hall Meeting/House of Delegates Reports
    Saturday, 4:15 p.m.
    Debra Herman, Pharm.D., president of the New Mexico Pharmacists Association, is in a unique practice with limited prescribing rights. She will present a CE program just prior to the OPA Town Hall meeting where you'll be able to express your opinion as to whether Ohio pharmacists should also have prescribing rights. House of Delegates and OPA Committee Reports will be given. There are no proposed resolutions or Bylaws changes to consider at this time.

    Alumni Reception and President's Banquet
    Saturday, 6:30 p.m.
    The College Alumni Reception, sponsored by the Council of Ohio Colleges of Pharmacy, is a great way to start your evening, while renewing friendships and catching up on the latest at your university. Following the reception, please join us for the President's Banquet where dinner will be served, accompanied by elegant, relaxing music. OPA President-Elect Debra Parker will be installed as President along with the 2006-2007 officers and trustees. Immediately following the banquet, please plan to join us for the President's Reception featuring more music, a dessert bar and beverages.

Stop by the OPA registration desk to pick up your "Experience Easton" coupon book, map, and transportation information. It is not necessary to register for this event.


    American Red Cross Workplace Training
    Adult CPR with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Review
    Sunday, 1:00 p.m.
    Pharmacists who plan to administer adult immunizations (influenza, pneumonia, tetanus, hepatitis A and hepatitis B) must receive and maintain certification to perform basic life-support procedures by completing a basic life-support training course.

    We are pleased to offer Adult CPR with AED Review on Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the Annual Conference. This 3.5-hour course will provide recertification of adult CPR skills and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). The review course should only be taken if you have previously received training in CPR and the use of an AED. Skills for the course will include care for a choking victim, recognizing and reacting during an emergency, signs and symptoms of a heart attack, and adult CPR used in conjunction with an AED. Even if you do not plan on offering an immunization program in your practice, CPR training is important for all health professionals. The program will be assigned 0.35 CEU (ACPE #129-000-06-045-L04).

    You can register for the Adult CPR and AED Review course on the Annual Conference registration form. The cost is $45, and is not included in the full registration fee for the Annual Conference. The deadline to register for this course is April 7, 2006.

    CAREER FAIR INFORMATION
    The Ohio Pharmacists Association is pleased to invite you to participate in the Annual Career Fair which will be held Saturday, April 22, 2006. All employers looking for interns, residents, new graduates and experienced pharmacists are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.
  • Registration Fee - $200
    Fee includes: 6' skirted table, two box lunches, and two complimentary admissions to any 2-hour CE program on Saturday.
