The 2007 Midyear Meeting will afford pharmacists the information, tools, strategies, and solutions they need to improve patient outcomes and enhance medication adherence behaviors in a number of disease states. Jointly sponsored by the Ohio Pharmacists Association and the Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists, this meeting will provide information to readily implement in a variety of practice settings.

Medication Adherence Evaluation and the Pharmacist

The purpose of this session is to educate the audience about recent findings related to medication use behaviors in chronically ill patients. The session will also explore how the pharmacist can play an important role in enhancing medication adherence behaviors and optimizing patient outcomes in chronic medical conditions which require controller pharmacotherapy.

Diagnosis, Management and Prevention of COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) is a treatable and preventable disease, yet it remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This session will review the pathophysiology and differential diagnosis of COPD, as well as co-morbidities and risk factors associated with the disease. Evidence-based guidelines for use of pharmacotherapy and non-pharmacologic treatment for the management of stable COPD and exacerbations will be included.

This session examines the drugs most frequently associated with adverse reactions and the drugs most frequently associated with medication errors. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disease characterized by an increasing loss of memory and other cognitive functions, which is challenging for the patient as well as the caregiver. This program will focus on the pathophysiology and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, current treatment options, and future therapies in clinical trials. Our speaker will also include support group resources to share with pharmacists for patient referral.

Oral Chemotherapy Medications: Issues and Opportunities

Advances in the treatment of cancer include new oral chemotherapy agents that differ from agents that have historically been used. This session will review the mechanisms of action, possible drug interactions and adverse events of the newer oral chemotherapeutic agents. Advantages and barriers for both patients and caregivers when administering oral chemotherapy, as well as payment issues, will be included.

Drug-Eluting Stents in 2007 and the Next Big Things in Cardiology

This session will provide an overview of the use of drug-eluting stents and medication regimens in patients with coronary artery disease. Controversies surrounding use of drug-eluting vs. bare metal stents, current recommendations for medications following stent placement, and future advances in cardiology will be addressed. Case-studies of patients with angina and/or recent history of myocardial infarction will be included.

Our speaker will provide an overview of oral health concerns that patients may present to their pharmacist. Use of fluoride containing products, changing recommendations for antimicrobial prophylaxis prior to dental procedures, osteonecrosis of the jaw following use of bisphosphonates, as well as selection of tooth whitening products, antimicrobial mouth rinses and toothpastes will be addressed.

Understanding CLIA and OSHA: A Primer for Pharmacists

This program will provide pharmacists with an overview of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) as it relates to conducting pharmacy-based CLIA-waived tests and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations that pertain to blood-borne pathogen exposure for pharmacists collecting samples for laboratory testing and those providing adult immunizations.

The mission of the Ohio Pharmacists Foundation is to provide educational programs for pharmacists and consumers of health care that enhance the practice of pharmacy and patient outcomes, and to conduct research to support these efforts.
