2006 Midyear Program Descriptions

Patient Assessment to Improve Outcomes
Marcel Casavant, M.D., FACEP FACMT
Associate Professor, The Ohio State University
ACPE # 129-000-06-048-L01 0.2 CEU

Medication therapy review, compliance monitoring, and detection of adverse events from medications are especially important for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, and congestive heart failure. Pharmacists are often the first to recognize patients' symptoms, and have the opportunity to improve therapeutic outcomes for their patients. Our speaker will discuss common signs and symptoms that these patients may present in the pharmacy, differentiate emergency from non-emergency situations, and suggest appropriate intervention/referral. Sponsor: Daiichi Sankyo, Inc.

Drug Dosing Dilemmas in Chronic Kidney Disease
Mariann Churchwell, PharmD
Assistant Professor
University
of Toledo, College of Pharmacy
ACPE # 129-000-06-049-L01 0.2 CEU
This session will provide a general review of drug dosing in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), including changes in adsorption, metabolism, distribution and elimination. Drugs to avoid, use with caution or dose adjust for CKD patients, specifically CKD stages 3-5, will be discussed. This presentation will also include a discussion of OTC drugs, herbal therapies, as well as prescription medications that have the potential to harm a CKD patient.

Laura Poland, R.D., L.D.
Registered Dietitian
The Rite Bite Wellness Center
ACPE # 129-000-06-051-L01 0.2 CEU
Pharmacy shelves are crowded with an overabundance of multiple vitamin/mineral supplements, which makes it difficult to discern one from another. The fact that the first vitamin was discovered less than 100 years ago also brings the realization that our understanding is still quite limited. During this session, we will look at current usage of vitamin/mineral supplements, recommended intake levels, and therapeutic uses for disease management.

Mark Herbert, M.D., Infectious Diseases Specialist, Columbus, OH
Barbara Bradley, RN, MS, Chief, Bureau of Infectious Disease Control, Ohio Department of Health
Loren Shaffer, Early Events Surveillance Supervisor, Bureau of Health Surveillance, Ohio Department of Health
Carol Elder, Infection Control Manager, Mount Carmel West Hospital, Columbus, OH
ACPE # 129-000-06-052-L01 0.2 CEU
Worldwide experts believe that another pandemic influenza is inevitable and possibly imminent. Scientists believe that avian viruses played a role in the last three pandemics, and since 1997 unprecedented outbreaks of H5N1 influenza in birds has spread to three continents. Our panel will present the clinical manifestations and control of avian influenza (bird flu); Ohio's pandemic influenza planning efforts coordinated by the Ohio Department of Health; recent legislation outlining the pharmacist's duty to report medication usage changes that might be caused by bioterrorism or certain diseases; and Best Practices of an Ohio hospital in preparing for a pandemic. Time will be allotted for Q&A for this impressive panel of experts.

Asthma is a common chronic disease, and pharmacists can have a major impact on managing the disease by working with patients to prevent acute attacks. This program is designed to provide an overview of the pathophysiology of asthma and treatment options, including possible genetic differences in drug response. The rationale behind the selection of a daily controlling agent, and the current controversy regarding the use of beta-2 agonists and other novel inhaled therapy will also be discussed.

Opioid Addiction Pharmacotherapy: Beyond Methadone
Tony Tommasello, Pharmacist, Ph.D.
Director, Office of Substance Abuse Studies
University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
ACPE # 129-000-06-054-L01 0.1 CEU
Opioid addiction is on the rise due to changes in the market of illicit heroin and increased diversion of prescription opioids.
