2004 Continuing Education Reporting: Don't Be Caught Short

Helpful CE Tracking Record form available

On February 1, 2002 the rules on Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) in Ohio changed. It is still necessary for pharmacists to report 60 hours (6 CEUs) of CPE over a three-year reporting period, but the only required subject is three (3) hours (0.3 CEU) of Ohio Board-approved jurisprudence. The remaining 57 hours (5.7 CEUs) may be in any category.

The Board of Pharmacy has also changed the time that CPE is reported. Beginning in 2004, those pharmacists whose licenses begin with 03-1 will be required to report their CPE during the spring, prior to the time for renewal of the pocket identification card. These pharmacists will be required to report CPE no later than May 15, 2004. Certificates (statements of credit) dated on or after March 1, 2001 that were NOT used for CPE reporting in 2001 can be used for this reporting period. Those pharmacists who do not return the CPE report form by the required date will not receive a pharmacist license renewal application until the CPE report form is received by the Board of Pharmacy office.

If you report your continuing education in 2004, be sure to check your total CPE early to avoid being caught short. The earlier deadline means that you only have until May to obtain CPE, instead of August. OPA offers live continuing pharmacy education annually at the Annual Conference and Midyear Meeting.
